📋 Admission Requirements for Bangladeshi Students

Degree
A recognised undergraduate degree with strong grades. German universities typically require the equivalent of a German grade of 2.5 or better (roughly CGPA 3.0 to 3.5 on a 4.0 scale). Check the anabin database to verify your university and degree are recognised.
Language
For English-taught programmes: IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 90 minimum. For German-taught programmes: TestDaF level 4 or DSH-2 required. Start language preparation early as German B2 takes 6 to 12 months from scratch for most Bangladeshi students.
Motivation
Motivation Letter (Motivationsschreiben). A 1 to 2 page document explaining why you are applying to this specific programme at this specific university, your research interests and your career goals. More research-specific than a general SOP.
Finances
Blocked account with EUR 11,208 (as of 2024). Open through Fintiba, Coracle or Deutsche Bank before applying for your student visa. The funds are released monthly at EUR 934 as your living allowance during your studies in Germany.
Visa
Apply for the National Visa (Type D) at the German Embassy Dhaka. Book appointments early — they fill up 6 to 8 weeks in advance. Bring all documents in the correct format. Processing takes 6 to 12 weeks after the appointment.

📅 Your Germany Application Timeline

12 Months Before Intake: Research and Language
Identify 5 to 8 target programmes on uni-assist.de and DAAD.de. Begin IELTS or German language preparation immediately. Check each university's specific entry requirements on their official website.
9 Months Before: Documents and Applications
Get your degree certificates translated and legalised (apostilled or notarised). Write your motivation letter tailored to each university. Submit applications through uni-assist or directly to the university — check which system each uses.
6 Months Before: Admission Letter and Visa Prep
Once you receive an admission letter, open your Fintiba blocked account immediately. Book your German Embassy visa appointment. Arrange health insurance for Germany. Confirm accommodation through the university student housing office.
3 Months Before: Visa Interview and Departure Prep
Attend visa interview with complete document set. After visa approval, book flights. Register at your German city's residents registration office (Anmeldung) within 2 weeks of arriving — this is legally required and unlocks banking and services.
💡
The Uni-Assist Trap: Many German universities use uni-assist.de to process international applications. This system charges a fee per application and has its own document requirements separate from the university portal. Submit to uni-assist first and allow 6 to 8 weeks for processing before the university reviews your file. Missing this step is the most common reason for late applications.

✅ Germany Application Wins

  • Start 12 months before your target intake
  • Apply to 5 to 8 universities simultaneously
  • Open your blocked account as soon as you have an offer
  • Book the embassy appointment immediately after offer
  • Join Bangladeshi student groups in your target city

❌ Germany Application Mistakes

  • Applying to only 1 or 2 universities
  • Forgetting to use uni-assist for applicable universities
  • Submitting untranslated documents
  • Delaying the blocked account opening
  • Not checking the anabin database for degree recognition
